The Catawba Indian Nation Greenway Trail offers a unique opportunity to experience history along the Catawba River where the Catawba Indians have resided since 5000 B.C. The Catawba Indian Nation is the only federally recognized tribe in South Carolina. The public is welcome to walk along the Nation's three trails and visit the Cultural Center.
There are three trails on this reservation that connect to each other. We encourage you to start at the trailhead behind the Cultural Center called the Cultural Center Trail or the Yehasuri Trail which will bring you down to the river after .6 miles. This section of trail hosts interpretive signage about the importance of the land to the tribe's cultural as well as a Catawba dwelling, a bark house, dugout trees, story circle and active archeological dig. Take a left when you reach the river which will bring you on to the Catawba Indian Nation Greenway Trail. This 1.6 mile segment of the Carolina Thread Trail follows alongside the river. You can choose to turn off on to the Loop Trail towards the Government Center before the Greenway Trail ends by taking the Loop Trail west .3 miles. This out and back trail follows a well traveled route used by the earliest inhabitants of South Carolina. There are benches along the way to rest and enjoy beautiful views of the river.
Bathrooms are located in the Cultural Center along with a gift shop and historic exhibits. Entrance is free of charge.
An Imprint is an Impact. Please protect the trails. Don’t ride if the ground is muddy and be mindful when you hike in wet conditions.
